- privileged public transit -

Apparently

According to two kids

I’m not supposed to ride public transit late at night

Because of my clothes

And my white

They said I looked like Harvard

From across the car

And came to me

And said hey man

“White Power”

And held out a hand

To slap

And I cocked my head

A bit

And held his eyes

And pulled my smile to the side

And squinted the same side's eye

And sized him up

Without judgement

And put out my hand

To give what he wanted

And he pulled his hand back

And with surprise

Laughed loudly

And looked to his friend

But got nothing

For fuel

So him and his friend

They shuffled on

But intrigued

Turned back

And tested my resolve

With a pointed finger

And a hey man

“Make America great again?”

And innocently

But silently

But with resolve

I pointed my chin down

And sagged my cheeks

And shook my head quickly

Like a boy

And the test continued

With a aww naww

“Make America black again!”

And looked to me for response

And I smiled

And shrugged

And he saw

That it didn’t matter to me

And the two boys

Moved on
